MARCY MARXER is a multi-instrumentalist, studio musician, performer, songwriter and producer with 30 years of experience and a shelf of impressive awards. She has played acoustic music on Emmy Award winning National Geographic specials, platinum shipping Eva Cassidy CD’s and on over 50 recordings and instructional materials created with her partner, Cathy Fink.

Marcy's guitar playing spans a variety of styles- swing rhythm and lead, bluegrass, old time, celtic fingerpicking, folk fingerpicking and some of the most tasteful backup you can hear. The C.F. Martin Co. has honored Marcy with her very own signature model guitar, the MC3H which she helped design. Flatpick Guitar Magazine called Marcy “one of the country’s top Western style guitar players”. She also plays mandolin, bouzouki, hammered dulcimer, Latin percussion, banjos, pennywhistle and flutes and of course, the beloved ukulele.

After a recording session with Mike Seeger, Marcy fell in love with his 1918 Gibson cello banjo. She searched the world for one, recorded some youtube clips and was soon gaining a following for her amazing cello banjo music. The Gold Tone Banjo Company began making the Marcy Marxer model Cello Banjo and the instrument has since shown up in folk, celtic and even punk bands!

The fun-loving Marcy is all about connecting music and people. She directs 3 ukulele orchestras: a seniors uke club, a Brownie uke club and the Ukulele Orchestra of Washington.

She has also created several online social networks for musicians:
Girls With Guitars - networking female guitar players, members as young as 12 and as old as 75+ have joined, met, swapped, displayed and enoyed.
Ukuelele Social Club - a worldwide social network of ukulele players

Marcy has put ukulele lessons online at YouTube and you can also see her incredible cello banjo playing there.

Master of wordplay, Marcy' s songwriting is yet another facet of her talents. Check out "Swingtime Lullaby" where she creates 2 swing songs with different melodies over the same chord progression in the 1940's style. Or listen to the new "Washboard Rhythm Song" on the "Banjo To Beatbox" project to be amazed at her internal rhyming.

Last, but not least, Marcy is a wonderful teacher with a large following at top music camps such as Steve Kaufman's Acoustic Camp, Mars Hill, Woods Camp, etc. One fun-lovin' gal with talent in all 10 fingers and a heart of gold to accompany them!

ROLLY BROWN was just six years old when the Everly Brothers released "Bye Bye Love". For some unknown reason, the sound of their big Gibson sunburst guitars permeated his little developing brain. He was left with a "fixed idea"; that he, too, could become a guitar player.

Young Rolly whined for eight years before he convinced his mom to buy him a cheap guitar.By that time, he had forgotten all about the Everly Brothers, so, instead of proceeding immediately to the sound his soul craved (the four bar guitar intro to "Bye Bye Love"), he began meandering around the guitar cosmos, learning everything he could find, from folk to blues to jazz. Names of esoteric guitar virtuosi like Bert Jansch, Dave Van Ronk, Steve Mann, and Joseph Spence became household words to Rolly. He met the great Rev. Gary Davis, and studied Davis' ragtime blues style, meanwhile transcribing many of the classic rags of Scott Joplin and the ornate pieces of Jelly Roll Morton.

In 1980, Rolly won the prestigious Nat'l Guitar Fingerpicking Championships held annually in Winfield KS. Afterwards, he settled in Philadelphia, where he studied jazz guitar with Joseph Federico. He produced a weekly public radio show called "Guitar Wizards" for three years, and played backup guitar for many folk luminaries who passed through Philly while also pursuing a solo career. In 1989 he was nominated for a Philadelphia Music Award as best instrumentalist in folk music.

In the early '90s, Rolly saw an old film clip of the Everly Brothers playing "Bye Bye Love", and, as if a heavy object had fallen on his head, suddenly remembered why he began the guitar. He grabbed his big Gibson sunburst guitar (why had he been drawn to that guitar, anyway?) and learned the opening bars of "Bye Bye Love". His journey was complete.

1992 saw the release of Rolly's first solo album, "No Need For Words". This was followed in 1997 by "Max's Ramble", Another solo guitar collection, and the recent "Dog Is My Co-Pilot", which includes singing and ensemble playing as well as Rolly's trademark solo guitar style. These recordings are, for the most part, mercifully devoid of guitar licks from "Bye Bye Love."

With 39 years of experience on the acoustic guitar, Rolly has been a National Fingerpicking Champion and a Philadelphia Music Award nominee. A popular guitar teacher, Rolly offers dozens of videos on YouTube and a Weekly Tip column to share guitar knowledge and resources. He hosted the Guitar Wizards radio show which ran on public radio in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Maine for several years. He has served as a sideman for Magpie, Winnie Winston, Saul Broudy, Jack McGann, Priscilla Herdman, Jay Ansill, and many others, and has recently performed with 1995 National Flatpicking Champion Mark Cosgrove, and, until her tragic death, with the late fiddler and singer extraordinaire Freyda Epstein.

Several years ago, I thought it would be fun to share some guitar knowledge and resources. I also instituted a Weekly Tip column for awhile, which now includes the Youtube chord videos as well. Life then got more complicated, and I really haven't had time to continue adding tips, but I'll hopefully be doing so in the near future. There is still a substantial amount of info there, which I hope you'll find helpful!
